Biography:
NOVEMBER GRIEF was a death metal band from Montreal, Canada. Initially called Mistrust, the band was founded in 1993 by Annie Leclerc on drums, as well as vocalist Stéphanie Masson, who took over the bass duties by failing to find anyone to fill the position. The band became complete with the addition of guitarist Véronique Lambert and the trio decided to rename themselves November Grief, according to them more in line with their style. A year later they released their first demo titled “Evil-ution”, recorded in their rehearsal room, with which they began sweeping through the stages of Quebec.
A year later, the sound of November Grief got solidified with the addition of a second guitarist Chantal Levesque – who indeed brought fresh ideas and a more brutal sound, as reflected in their second demo “To Live … In this world of Chaos”. This 10-song demo was recorded in the studio “Le Mur du Son” in four days. It reached a much more professional sound thanks to the work of Jean-Francois Dagenais of Kataklysm, who engineered it.
After a couple of years of playing, guitarists Véronique and Chantal left the ship and entered Carole Roy. Together as a three piece, the band recorded one song for the “Awakening – Females In Extreme Music” compilation in 1997 and disbanded shortly after. Although the band never went further, they remain an important band in the history of Quebec Death Metal, and one of the first ever all-female Extreme metal bands.

NOVEMBER GRIEF était un groupe de Death métal de Montréal. Initialement appelé Mistrust, le groupe a été fondé en 1993 par Annie Leclerc à la batterie et la chanteuse Stéphanie Masson, bientôt également bassiste dû à la difficulté à trouver quelqu’un pour ce poste. Le groupe est devenu complet avec l’ajout de la guitariste Véronique Lambert et le trio a décidé de se renommer November Grief, selon eux plus en phase avec leur style assez Doom. Un an plus tard, armées de leur premier démo intitulé «Evil-ution» enregistré dans leur salle de pratique, elles ont commencé à parcourir les scènes du Québec.
En 1995, le son de November Grief s’est solidifié avec l’ajout d’une deuxième guitariste, Chantal Lévesque, qui a apporté de nouvelles idées et un son plus brutal, comme en témoigne leur deuxième démo «To Live… In This World of Chaos» . Ce démo de 10 chansons a été enregistré au studio «Le Mur du Son» en quatre jours. Il présente un son beaucoup plus professionnel grâce au travail de Jean-François Dagenais de Kataklysm qui l’a produit.
Après quelques années ensemble, les guitaristes Véronique et Chantal ont quitté le groupe, remplacées par Carole Roy. En trio, le groupe a enregistré une chanson pour la compilation «Awakening – Females In Extreme Music» en 1997 avant de se séparer peu de temps après. Cette chanson et des chansons du premier démo sont incluses en bonus sur cette réédition.
Bien que November Grief ne soit jamais allé plus loin, le groupe demeure important dans l’histoire du Death métal québécois et fut un des tout premiers groupes de métal extrême entièrement féminin.
